Full Description

Roman features including a ditch, pits, buildings and large quantities of brick and tile (potentially from a nearby structure) at the former site of Hallet's Garage, Canterbury.
The ditch was aligned E-W, the pits were thought to have been used for domestic refuse, the buildings are described as 'sunken-featured'. The features are all located at a site adjacent to the Roman road.
This information was contained within the background material for the desk-based assessment of a nearby site. (1)

Several ditch features dating from the Roman period were present at the site, one aligned E-W, dating from the mid-late 1st century, and containing grog tempered pottery dating from 100 BC-43 AD. The other ditch was aligned NW-SE and dating from the mid-late 2nd century. This later ditch is thought to represent a feature associated with the Roman road. The presence of a built structure is evidenced by the discovery of brick near to the features.
A ditch and a pit feature were located beneath metallings (representing Roman street surfaces). Other pits were excavated at the site, including two sub-rectangular pits dating from the mid 1st to late 2nd century; these measured between 4.5-6m in length, between 2.5-3.5m in width and 0.50–0.75m in depth, and were filled with domestic refuse including pottery, animal remains, charcoal, and marine shellfish. One of the pits contained evidence for internal post-holes, whils the other contained a gravel metalled surface, thought to represent elements of sunken floored buildings.
Another pit was also identified at the site which contained pottery and animal bone, and has been interpreted as being potentially related to occupation. Further later 2nd-3rd century pitting on a smaller scale was present at the site, with the pits filled with domestic refuse (this information was recovered from the original report - not currently on the HER database).
