Full Description

A medieval brickearth quarry was excavated at the former Hallet's Garage site. The quarry pits are thought to date from the 12th century, and may have been associated with 13th-14th century properties also excavated at the site (TR 15 NW 2609). This information was recovered from background material for the desk-based assessment of a nearby site.(1)

Anglo-Saxon pits of undertermined function were also excavated at the site. These appear to have been used as refuse pits during the 8th-10th centuries. They were found to contain large quantities of burnt daub, slag, Roman tile, Roman pottery, and 9th-10th century Anglo-Saxon pottery. As this site is Anglo-Saxon, the Roman tile and pottery is likely to be a residual deposit, therefore has not been recorded as a find with this record. Also included in one of the pits was an almost complete cat skeleton; the cat had some form of disability and its final meal comprised chicken wings (determined through environmental sampling). It is likely that this animal was kept as a pet.
The presence of burnt daub suggests that Anglo-Saxon properties may have been present in the vicinity of the site, possibly early versions of the medieval properties on St Dunstan's Street.
Further pits were excavated dating from the 11th-13th centuries, thought to have primarily been created for the purpose of brickearth quarrying. These pits were also used as refuse pits, and were found to contain burnt daub and slag, suggesting a domestic and industrial function. The quarrying was likely conducted on a small-scale basis, and in some cases the pits appear to avoid the Roman burials, with some having disturbed the burials and then replaced the remains in anatomically incorrect positions (this information was retrieved from the original report which is not currently available on the Kent HER).
