Full Description
An archaeological evaluation in 2022 at 64 London Road, Canterbury uncovered a post-hole within a pit feature dating from the post-Roman period. The pit was rectangular, aligned ENE-WSW, and measuring 0.75x0.60x0.25-0.30m. The pit contained 3 fragments of burnt flint alongside 2 worked waste flakes and a heavily eroded fragment of medieval roofing tile. It has been dated to the medieval/post-medieval periods due to the presence of the roofing tile - suggesting that the worked flint is likely to represent residual deposition.
Within the larger pit was a smaller square cut, measuring 0.19x0.22x0.08m, thought to represent a post-hole.
The features are thought to potentially have had an agricultural function - possibly related to hop fields known to exist in this area.
Earlier archaeological evidence at the site comprised a late Iron Age/Romano-British ditch (TR 15 NW 2613), thought to be related to a field system - suggesting that the area may have held an agricultural function across different periods. (1)
