Full Description
Roman/Anglo-Saxon occupation features, comprising a clay floor, a gravel surface, and a sequence of in situ soil and demoiltion deposits were excavated in 2016 at the Great Cloister.
The deposits comprised a sequence of in situ soil deposits and probable demolition deposits, several of which sandwiched a soil layer which contained structural debris.
The demolition material recovered is thought to indicate that the horizon of debris may have originally been extensive. Finds recovered from the deposits include Roman tile and a fragment of late 1st-2nd century pottery. These are either indicative of a Roman date for the deposits, or may represent residual/redeposited material.
Other features included a possible gravel surface and a clay floor located above it. One of the soils surrounding these features contained Roman tile fragments.
These features are suggested to potentially date from the Roman period (due to the Roman material associated with them), or may be Anglo-Saxon in date, potentially associated with the cathedral itself. Finds associated with the layers/features include Roman tile, a fragment of Roman pottery, daub, and animal bone.
Later archaeological features at the site include a possible medieval structure (TR 15 NE 1979), and post-medieval burials (TR 15 NE 1980). (1)
