Full Description

Medieval walls, deposits, and yard surfaces at Mitchinson's Yard, Canterbury. A "series of various demolition(?) deposits and surfaces over soil probably date to the medieval and post-medieval periods…What may have been levelling deposits within a construction trench cut through soils, over metalling, were overlain by the south wall of the medieval Almonry Chapel exposed in 1979. A stub of mortared flintwork... was presumably part of a medieval wall, probably running east to west. An unseen impenetrable obstruction in (one area of the site) may have been another medieval or post-medieval wall but may equally well have been a modern service or rubble deposit" (from the original report, 1). A spine wall for the Almonry Chapel was also identified, "extending longitudinally east-west following the centre line of the building and supporting a first floor" (from the original report, 1). The wall was aligned NW-SE, and measured 0.70m in width, standing in excess of 0.20m. The wall was constructed of large flint nodules, bonded with lime mortar (1).
