Full Description
Early medieval and medieval deposits and possible pit features were excavated at Mitchinson's House, Canterbury in 2016. The occupation deposit related to a number of post-Roman phases - "post Roman abandonment and flooding; early to mid seventh-century occupation; tenth- to mid eleventh-century occupation" (from the original report, 1). This deposit contained mortar, oyster shell fragments, and charcoal flecking.
The other deposit may be a dump deposit associated with a slighted Roman rampart identified through previous excavations. This layer contained relatively unworn Roman pottery, and may relate to "period of rapid topographical change following the acquisition of the land by the priory for use as an Almonry in c. 1150" (from the original report, 1).
The pit feature(s) were characterised by a series of horizontal layers potentially representing successive fills within one or more large pit features. Whilst not dating evidence was recovered from these layers, the previous excavation identified large rubbish pits which were cut to the rear of properties adjoining the Borough prior to the construction of the Almonry in 1150, suggesting that if these are pits then they may date from the medieval period or earlier. These pit fills were sealed by a levelling deposit suggested to have been used to seal the uneven ground surface before Almonry Court was laid out. This deposit contained brick, tile and mortar fragments (1).
