Full Description
Early medieval pit features were excavated at 2 St John's Lane in 1992. Around 6 of these features were identified at the site. The pits had combined measurements of between 0.30-1.30m long, 0.38-1.05m wide, and 0.11-1.26m deep. The pits contained a range of artefacts including pottery, animal bone, medieval roof tile, mortar, a copper alloy coin, iron nails, slag, daub, charcoal, stone, and Roman tile and brick (presumably residual). It is unclear how many of these artefacts represent residual material, however, they have been recorded as finds, particularly as features found during previous excavations in the area are known to have functioned as refuse pits, suggesting that these finds represent the disposal of rubbish. The pits are suggested to relate to a nearby domestic dwelling from the early medieval period. Tthe church of St John the Poor was located in its vicinity, and the surrounding areas is known to have undergone development during the early medieval period.
The other medieval feature at the site comprised a robber trench associated with the earlier Roman wall at the site; this contained pottery, Roman tile, imbrex, tegula, flue tile, mortar, animal bone, and glass (many of these finds are likely to have been residual material from Roman activity at the site.
Earlier activity at the site comprised late Bronze Age and early Iron Age occupation (TR 15 NW 2633), and a Roman pit feature (TR 15 NW 1726). (1)
