Full Description

Medieval features including a possible floor and a late/post-medieval pit were excavated at 20 Love Lane, Canterbury, in 2004. The possible floor was comprised of a thin (less than 0.1m) layer of yellow clay which was situated above the earlier Anglo-Saxon deposits (TR 15 NE 2010) at the site. The pit extended into the trench by 0.5m and was in excess of 0.75m deep. Its fill contained peg tile (probably dating from the post-medieval period), animal bone, flint, and pottery dating between 1375-1525 AD. The green staining of the pit edges and fill suggested that it had functioned as a cess pit, whilst the inclusions within the pit's fill suggested it was also used as a rubbish dump. (1)
