Full Description

A medieval surface was excavated at 45 St Peter's Street, Canterbury during an evaluation in 2018. The medieval surface comprised a 0.20-0.25m deposit containing small-large peg-tile fragments, red brick fragments, small and rare inclusions of mortar and charcoal. This layer was overlain by a deposit of garden soil dating from the later medieval and post-medieval periods. This contained mortar, charcoal, coal, clinker, peg-tile, chalk, animal bone, oyster, and mussel shell.
Earlier layers at the site included two possible dump deposits of clayey silt/silty clay dating to some point probably dating to the medieval period. These contained charcoal, oyster shell, flint fragments, chalk, and mortar.
Later post-medieval features at the site included a large pit or infilled cellar (18th century), garden soil, and a brick surface. (1)
