Full Description
Late prehistoric/Roman ditches were excavated on land at the rear of 121-125 Sturry Road, during an evaluation in 2012. The fills of the ditches contained two sherds of well-abraded Roman pottery, iron slag, two possibly residual fragments of worked flint, alongside some burnt flint and charcoal flecks. The ditches were aligned on a NW-SE axis. Earlier evidence at the site included an assemblage of largely residual late Neolithic/Iron Age worked flint (TR 15 NE 2031).
Roman burials have been found along Sturry Road and the foundation of a masonry building indicative of Roman occupation interpreted as an extra mural farmstead has been found in the vicinity of the site. (1)
An excavation carried out in 2015 identified 10 ditches at the site dated between the later prehistoric period and the mid Roman period - 1550BC-250 AD.
Of the ditches dating to the later prehistoric period, one was aligned NW-SE and measured 10.1x0.75-0.90x0.35m, another was aligned NE-SW and measured 8x0.80-1.10x0.35m, another was aligned NW-SE and measured 7.25x1.94x0.75m, and the final ditch analaysed was aligned NE-SW and measured 15x2.15x0.73m.
Of the ditches dating between the later prehistoric and Roman periods, 4 were aligned NW-SE, and 3 were aligned NE-SW. The ditches measured between 3.8-13m in length, 0.6-1.80m in width, and 0.20-0.73m in depth.
The combined fills of all the ditches contained a rim sherd of pottery, ceramic building material, a copper alloy button, pottery sherds, daub, Roman brick and tile, animal teeth, burnt flint, worked flint (Iron Age).
Residual finds from the ditches included worked flint and burnt flint (TR 15 NE 2031). (2)
