Full Description

Medieval quarry pits, boundary ditches, post-pits, and related features were excavated in 2006 at 95-103 Sturry Road Canterbury during an investigation of the site.

The 3 boundary ditches measured between 3.40-12.20m in length, 0.80-1.10m in width, and 0.20-0.25m in depth. The ditches were aligned NW-SE.
Finds recovered from the fills of the ditches included calcined and struck flint, prehistoric, and Roman pottery (all presumably residual), medieval pottery, and metal slag.

Another ditch feature was identified at the site which may represent a continuation of one of the boundary ditches. This feature has been recorded as a Roman ditch (TR 15 NE 1839), however the dating evidence regarding this feature is unclear, therefore it could potentially originate from the medieval period.

Two features at the site were thought to potentially represent ground beam slots and associated post settings, alongside an irregular post-pit alignment - suggesting a built structure or structures were present at the site. Further evidence for this was represented by fired clay and/or daub with surfaces and wattle impressions. A large quantity of burnt daub and charcoal was recovered from the fill of a pit, and was thought to have originated from an oven or possibly a kiln at the site.
One of the probable ground beam features was aligned NE-SW, whilst the other was aligned NW-SE. Their alignments and proximity lead to the interpretation that they might have originated from the same buidling - representing different sides of the structure. The features measured between 2.20-3.60m in length, 0.45-0.47m in width, and 0.17-0.45m in depth.
The alignment of post holes was around 6m in length, with the individual post-holes measuring around 0.18m in diameter and 0.17m in depth with some variation.
The ground beam slots and post settings contained artefacts in their fills including residual Roman pottery and tile, daub, medieval pottery, animal bone, calcined flint, burnt chalk, and metal slag.

8 pits were identified at the site; 4 of these were thought to represent quarry pits. One of the quarry pits measured over 9m in length and over 4m in width. The dimensions of the other quarry pits are not recorded. The quarry pits contained medieval pottery, daub, animal bone, iron slag, and calcined flint.

The 4 other pits are thought to be associated with the other features at the site; the pits had lengths between 0.60-1.80m, widths between 0.50-1.20m, and depths between 0.08-0.75m. The pits contained medieval pottery, (residual) prehistoric flint, pottery & Roman tile, animal bone, calcined flint, a crap of lead, daub, mortar, metal slag, and a fragment of copper alloy. (1)
