Full Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out on land off Southall Close, Minster, revealed a small quantity of later post medieval and modern features which likley relate to the former presence of a workhouse and hospital close this location prior to their demolition in the late 1980s.

in detail: the earliest feature identified on the site comprised animal burial 207 located in Trench 2.
This has been identified as a pig with its isolation suggesting that it may have been buried
away from farmsteads and other livestock, possibly due to disease. A number of nineteenth-century and modern features were recorded cutting the subsoil in trenches 4, 6 and 7. Frogged bricks recovered from pit 405 indicate a date no earlier than the mid to late nineteenth century for this feature. A layer of modern demolition material perhaps represents a dump of waste material related to the former workhouse and hospital buildings. In Trench 6, features included shallow irregular cut, service pipe and pit. Glass bottles and brick fragments were retrieved from the latter. In Trench 7, a hearth and possibly related sub-oval pit were identified. Slag and coal were recovered from the fill of the hearth and tile fragments from the adjacent pit. The inclusions indicate a post-medieval date. A layer, which sealed the subsoil at the southwestern end of trench 7, was cut by a pit. This contained inclusions of glass and slate and is suggested to be late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century in date. (information summarised from source) (1)
