A Pleistocene palaeochannel and a Cretaceous/late Pleistocene 'coombe' deposit were identified through geotechnical work at Station Road West Carpark, Canterbury in 2017.
At least one palaeochannel was identified at the site; another possible watercourse may also have been present, cutting the earlier palaeochannel.
The definite palaeochannel was represented by late Pleistocene fluvial gravels located in all but one of the boreholes. The palaeochannel was thought to be aligned NW-NE across the site, probably as a result of a braided river system.
The possible palaeochannel is represented by deposits of weathered/disturbed/redeposited late Pleistocene brickearth and clayey gravels and sands, thought potentially to represent the upper fill of an early Holocene/late Pleistocene palaeochannel.
Late Pleistocene coombe material was present in the form of a chalk gravel deposit.
The palaeochannels have been digitised as a polygon to encompass all boreholes which identified evidence for fluvial gravels associated with both the potential palaeochannels. (1)
