Full Description
Probable medieval quarrying and a possible kiln were identified at Station Road West Car Park, Canterbury during a watching brief in 2017.
The probable quarrying was represented by scorched or redeposited brickearth and evidence for the removal of layers in certain areas of the site, suggested to indicate clay quarrying.
Some sequences of clay and brickearth at the site were interpreted as stockpiled clays, as a result of quarrying, however, these have also been suggested to represent an intact brickearth sequence as a result of medieval quarrying undermining upper layers in order not to disturb Roman burials cut into the surface. This has also been seen at a neighborough site (Hallet's Garage).
A possible medieval kiln was also identified at the site - however, its primary interpretation was as a brick-lined sewer. The feature comprised a void with a hard surface below and with evidence for mortared brickwork. Fragments of mortared brick or tile were associated with it, and 'stockpiled clay' was encountered above it. (1)
