Full Description
A series of ditches were located around the village of St Nicholas At Wade, these formed part of the entrenchments that defended the village during WW2. Parts of these were revealed during an archaeological evaluation and geophysical survey which was undertaken on land to the north east of Down Barton Road. They are also visible on the 1940s aerial photographs of the area (as extant features) and on later aerial photographs as cropmarks. The trenches which were revealed were zig-zag trenches and also a circular area that may be a strong point which would seem strategically located near the road.
