Full Description

The SFB correlated exactly with a discrete, sub-rectangular geophysical anomaly in the west of the trench. The SFB pit was 4.73m long and 3.79m wide and at least 0.4m deep was north-west/south-east aligned and had vertical sides. It contained at least five fills including a 0.11m thick rammed chalk floor at the top of the sequence. Overlying the chalk floor, and below the SFB backfill deposit was a thin layer of possible trample which was 60mm thick. A small assemblage was recovered from the backfill deposit including 1st century AD pottery. A beam slot appears to be associated with the feature, this was 0.22m wide and 0.17m deep. The structural remains of the SFB also included a posthole in the south corner of the SFB, which was 0.34m diameter and 0.25m deep. It contained a residual prehistoric pottery sherd, oyster shell and a tile fragment. The evidence from the SFB structure overall would suggest a construction and use of the SFB in the 1st century AD. This fits into a wider landscape of late Iron Age and early Roman activity which was discovered across the site and in sites which have previously been excavated nearby and could be an outlier of either of two clusters of Romano-British SFBs known from settlement sites to the west. To the east of the building a pit and two post holes were recorded. The pit also contained material datable to the 1st century AD and could therefore be associated with the SFB.
