Full Description

34 medieval features including pits, post-holes, and wells, were excavated at Chantry Lane, Canterbury during an evaluation in 2015 and a strip, map, and sample excavation in 2016. Earlier features at the site date from the Anglo-Saxon period and include pits, a well, and a furnace (TR 15 NE 2057).

Many of the pits may have represented features for the disposal of refuse or waste, with a number of rubbish pits and cess pits present at the site. One of the largest of these features is thought to have been a rubbish pit; this measured 2.30x2x1.90m and was aligned NE-SW.
Post-holes, post-pits, and two wells at the site also dated from the medieval period. The wells measured 1.54x1.04x+2m and 1.30x0.86x1.20m.

Many of these features appear to have been dug on existing Anglo-Saxon and medieval property boundaries, evidenced by specific alignments and groupings. Post-holes have been interpreted as having originally been part of fence-lines indicating land-division at the site.

The fills of these features contained medieval pottery (71 sherds in total, many recovered as residual material), five unidentified iron objects, animal remains, oyster shell, charcoal, CBM, and iron slag.

22 features at the site could not be assigned a specific date; however, the majority of these have been speculatively assigned a medieval date due to their association with other medieval features at the site. These undated features include post-holes and pits. (1)
