Full Description

A Roman layer of grey-brown soil created over fluvial deposits at the site has been suggested to represent an agricultural layer. The layer contained pottery dating to the late 1st and 2nd centuries, and may have made up part of an 'island' within a marshy area of Roman Canterbury, as it is located at a higher area of ground within an area of floodplain. This 'island' may have been created as a result of natural processes or by people.
The soil layer was overlain by the Romano-British rampart ( TR 15 NW 216associated with a section of defensive wall between Northgate and Westgate. (1)
