Monument record TR 36 SW 1234 - Sections of two Iron Age and early Roman hollow ways - Thanet Parkway

Summary

The routes of two hollow-ways were identified during the excavation off Hengist Way, Cliffsend, Thanet, ahead of the construction of Thanet Parkway Rail station. One ran east west across the site and the other north-south, the second appeared to be a continuation of a hollow way seen during the East Kent Access investigations to the north. Both appeared to continue in use into the Roman period. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

Full Description

During an archaeological investigation ahead of the construction of Thanet Parkway rail station off Hengist Way, Cliffsend, a wide variety of archaeological features finds and deposits were uncovered. These included the routes of two hollow-ways. To the east of the excavation area, a north to south aligned hollow-way corresponds with that recorded during the EKA2 works. The second hollow-way lies to the south of the site and was aligned roughly east to west. The junction where these two throughfares met must have been situated just beyond the southern limit of the site. It is possible that these features originated in the early Iron Age, or even the later Bronze Age, although this cannot be substantiated as dateable material was not recovered from the earliest fills. Excavation demonstrated that the hollow-ways gradually infilled. Pottery recovered from later fills of these features suggests the use of these routes into at least the early Roman period. The hollow-ways represent major long-lived throughfares which almost certainly influenced the organization of land-use in the surrounding area. (information summarised from source) (1)
