Full Description

Roman mortar and clay surfaces, demolition layers, and a metalled surface were excavated at 46-47 High Street, Canterbury in 2019. A mortar surface was excavated at a depth of 1.54m below the ground surface; this was overlain by a clay floor, which was in turn overlain by a layer of demolition material. The layer of demolition material contained finds including Roman pottery, tile, and worked stone. Sampling of this layer retrieved a glass bead, fragments of a glass vessel, charred sereal grain, charcoal, mammal, fish, and bird bone, marine mollusca remains, hob nails, hammerscale, and slag.
A metalled surface dating to the Roman period was revealed in another trench.
Previous work at the site comprising excavations for the instaollations of a lift pit also revealed evidence for Roman activity in the form of a potential demolition layer. (1)
