Full Description
During an archaeological investigation ahead of the development of land to the north of Cliffsend Road, Cliffsend, a concentric penannular double ring ditch was located at the southwest end of the site. There was no evidence of a central mound and nothing of the monument survived as a visible earthwork. No human remains were recovered from the excavated portions, but any associated burials may have been located within an upstanding mound, should one have existed. There were also no contemporary features within the ring ditches. The inner ring ditch was c 14.5m in diameter with steep sides and a concave to flat base. The ditch was formed of three segments, the eastern side was broader and deeper than the west. Two entrances were located in the north-west and south-west, with the latter roughly aligning with the entrance of the outer ring ditch. The inner ring ditch situated to the left of middle of the outer ring ditch. The inner ring ditch was filled by up to four deposits of relatively sterile grey brown silts and fine sands.
The initial outer ring ditch had been mostly removed by later recuts and features, and survived particularly poorly in the west. However, estimating from its remnants, it was c 32m in diameter and was mostly between c 3.5 and 4.6m wide and c 0.9m deep with steep concave to straight sides and a flat base. An entrance, c 5m wide, was located in the south-west leading to the centre of the inner ring ditch. The entrance itself was a continuation of the penannular ditch, although dug to lesser depth, and forming a shallow causeway between the two blunt ended termini. When the penannular ditch had virtually silted-up, the outer ring ditch was redug. This ditch was again penannular in form, although the entrance shifted slightly to the west. The recut ditch was narrower but deeper than the initial ditch, with steep sides and a concave to flat base. The ditch was mostly between 1-1.3m deep and 2-3.35m wide. The ditch was filled with brown silt clay deposits and contained an assemblage of flintwork of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date, as well as residual earlier and intrusive later material. In addition, the small amount of recovered grog-tempered pottery recovered was also of a similar date. A fragmentary cattle skull placed in the base of ditch, at the bottom of the inner break of slope, is likely to represent a structured deposit.
This barrow forms part of a larger group of barrows recently discovered in and around Cliffsend. Six barrows were first found in 2004/5 at Cliffsend Farm and two more were excavated c 150m to the immediate north on the EKA2 site in 2009/10. Together this group of nine can be considered as a barrow cemetery, akin to the others known on Thanet, such as nearby Lord of the Manor and at Dumpton Park Drive, Bradstow.
