Full Description

During an archaeological investigation ahead of the development of land to the north of Cliffsend Road, Cliffsend a few features were identified as being of a Medieval date. These included a quarry and a building, both of which were positioned in the south western corner of the excavated area.

Only the south-easter part of the large quarry pit was recorded, the rest of the feature lay beyond the limit of the excavations. The pit measured at least c 10m by 7m and was 0.6m deep. After the silt clay natural had been quarried, the feature was left to silt up gradually and contained only a few finds. The building was dug through the edge of the infilled quarry and so can be said to have been clearly later than the quarry. The sub-rectangular structure was c 4.9m by 3.15m and the sunken element that measured c 0.7m deep with steep stepped sides and a flat base. The step in the sides could have feasibly supported form of timber suspended floor. Unlike the earlier buildings discovered at this site, this building did not contain an oven and therefore clearly served a different function. (information summarised from source)
