Monument record TR 36 SW 469 - Early Bronze Age Barrow 2 - Cliffsend Farm, Ramsgate, Thanet

Summary

Excavations ahead of the development of a site at Cliffsend Farm, Ramsgate, revealed a wide variety of interesting features and finds. The features included a group of Early Bronze Age barrows. Barrow two comprised a single ring ditch with a central rectangular pit which may have been a grave (but no human remains remained). (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

Full Description

Barrow 2 was located immediately to the north of barrow 1 with only 4m separating the outer edges of the ditches. It had a single ring ditch with a maximum width at the surface of 1.2m a maximum depth of 0.8m and an external diameter of 23.65m. the ditch was approximately circular, the fills were largely devoid of finds with only s few sherds of Early Bronze Age pottery and struck flint in its upper fills. A central sub rectangular pit was probably a grave, it was aligned WNW-ESE and measure 1.98m by 1.3m and 0.31m in depth within the pit were four small post holes arranged in a rectangle (possibly some kind of timber mortuary structure).
