Full Description

Medieval walls, floors and a possible medieval pit were excavated at 49-53 Burgate, Canterbury in 1945. The walls and floors were thought to be associated with infilled cellar(s) at the site. Infilling of the cellar appears to have occurred during the late 13th century to prevent a Roman wall at the site from collapsing as a result of "subsidence caused by an earlier medieval pit" (from the original report, 1). Another pit (undated although thought to be medieval) at the site was filled with chalk and flint. (1)
