Monument record TQ 77 SE 1395 - tramway linking the clay pit north of Buttercrock Wharf with the brick works south of Hoo St. Werburgh and eastwards

Summary

The earthworks of a tramway cutting can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. The tramway was fist depicted by the Ordnance Survey in 1933 linking the clay pit north of Buttercrock Wharf (see NMR 1545421) with the brick works south of Hoo St. Werburgh (see NMR 1545288) and continuing eastwards to TQ 7912 7176. This eastward continuation had been removed by 1942 with the digging of a further large clay pit. The cutting visible on air photos was centred on TQ 7871 7157 towards the southern end of the clay pit it once served. The tramway had been removed by this date and newer line laid to the south. Although not marked on the Ordnance Survey map what appears to be a second cutting or possibly a track left the main one at TQ 7877 7159 and headed south-west in the direction of the brick works. Air photos taken in 2007 show the area is now arable and pasture; part of the line can be seen as a cropmark. These features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
