Full Description

Elements of Roman structures and metalled surfaces were excavated at 30-33 High Street, Canterbury during an evaluation and borehole survey in 2004. Several layers of metalling were identified through the borehole survey, and elements of a 0.41m thick flint and mortar structure were also identified, associated with the Roman levels, suggesting the presence of buildings. The layer above this structural feature comprised flint and mortar rubble thought to represent a later demolition layer.
To the north of the site, a possible drain or water pipe was identified. This was formed from a large timber (0.25m thick) which may have represented a hollowed tree trunk. Located above this was a layer of occupation material with inclusions of Roman pottery and tile - this may be Roman or post-Roman in date. (1)
