Medieval and post-medieval buildings and features including pits were excavated at 30-33 High Street, Canterbury during en evaluation and borehole survey in 2004.
Medieval or early post-medieval wall footings and associated floors were identified, alongside probable medieval pits which were visible from the borehole survey and the evaluation test pits. The wall footings appeared to be comprised of flint, chalk, and brick, and some of the floor surfaces appeared to be formed of clay. In one trench, layers representing successive floor surfaces/trample deposits had a combined depth of 0.25m. The wall footings measured between 0.25-0.35m in width and 1.1-1.5m in length.
An early layer, presumably medieval in date, contained food debris including mussel and oyster shells, and animal remains, including chicken bones.
Occupation debris and a metalled surface identified through the borehole survey may also date to the medieval period - these elements are thought to have potentially been associated with structures at the site. (1)
