Full Description

Roman features including a linear feature, pits and deposits were excavated at Canterbury Police Station in 1999.

A linear feature of unknown function dating from the Roman period was identified at the site.

7 pits with dimensions ranging from 0.64-1.90m in length, 0.14-0.80m in width, and 0.19-0.86m in depth were identified during the excavations. One of these features was interpreted as a refuse pit, and another contained within its fill the remains of a small animal.

Finds associated with features at the site included bone and daub fragments, a sheet of copper alloy, Roman tile (including one fragment bearing a signature mark), glass, carbon, a very small amount of slag, tegula, oyster shell, imbrex, a coin of Hadrian (dating between 132-134 AD) and pottery dating between 150-300 AD.
A copper alloy bracelet dating from the Roman period was excavated as a residual artefact associated with a modern soil at the site.(1)
