Full Description

Three Anglo-Saxon pits were excavated at Canterbury Police Station in 1999.

One of the pits dated from the mid Anglo-Saxon period, and had recorded dimensions of 1.40x1.20x0.60m. The pit contained bone and oyster shell fragments, a small quantity of daub, Roman brick and tile, slag, pottery dating between 750-875 AD, alongside residual 2nd-3rd century Roman pottery.

The other two pits dated from the late Anglo-Saxon period, one measuring 2.50x2.10x1.10m, the other with recorded dimensions of 1.26x0.70x0.38m. These features contained within their fills, oyster shell, animal bone fragments, slag, residual Roman pottery, tile, and tegula, fish bones, a fragment of daub, and pottery dating between 750-1000 AD.
