Full Description

Medieval/post-medieval trackways were excavated during an evaluation, excavation and watching brief at the Spinning Wheel Hotel, Old Dover Road in 1999-2000.

Three trackways were also identified at the site, two of which were aligned NW-SE and were comprised of a parallel ruts measuring 1.80-1.95m in width. The third trackway was aligned E-W and cut a small oval feature which was excavated to a depth of 20cm. The third trackway was formed of a series of deposits and ruts. "The maximum width of the carriageways between the ruts of the trackways (was) about 7ft 6ins and 2ft 8ins between the pair of deeper central ruts, the most likely vehicle axle width. The lesser outer ruts flanking the trackways were probably formed as a result of the vehicles riding the edges of the tracks to avoid becoming stuck fast in the deeper ruts" from the original report, 2).
The trackways are thought to relate to a larger trackway complex visible in aerial photographs (TR 25 SW 118). Finds associated with the trackways include a George II 18th century halfpenny, post-medieval tile and pottery. Two of the trackways have been interpreted to date from no earlier than the medieval period and to have continued in use into the 19th century, the third is undated, but is also considered to have continued in use into the 19th century.

An E-W aligned linear feature was identified to the north of the trackways and may have functioned as a ditch. This feature survived to a depth of 13cm and was associated with a series of stake holes which were located along its base and sides.

An undated pit, undated post-holes, oval features, and a dog burial were also identified at the site. (1, 2)
