Full Description
Bronze Age - Iron Age activity was identified at The Old Coach House, Dover Road during 2015. These features were located to the north-east of the site and comprised Bronze Age - Iron Age pits and a possible Iron Age gully.
Two pits were identified, one of which measured 1.1m in width and 0.3m in depth and containing two sherds of Bronze Age/early Iron Age pottery, alongside a later fill of silty clay containing mid-late Iron Age pottery, struck flint, daub, and burnt flint. The other pit measured 1.4m in diameter and 0.3m in depth, containing flecks of daub and a single piece of burnt flint in its fill. Whilst no dating evidence was recovered from the second pit, it may be contemporary with the Bronze Age/early Iron Age pit identified at the site.
The gully was represented by a linear feature aligned N-S measuring 1.2x0.6x0.4m, and containing a single sherd of mid-late Iron Age pottery within its fill.
Earlier features identified at the site include a prehistoric pit and two tree throws (TR 24 NW 252) and later features comprised elements associated with post-medieval buildings (TR 24 NW 254). (1)
