Full Description
A ditch was discovered during an archaeological evaluation carried out at the former coal yard site in Conyngham Rd ahead of the redevelopment of the site. it was seen crossing three of the evaluation trenches on a roughly NE-SW alignment. The nature an distribution of the finds seems to suggest that the ditch functioned as a drainage watercourse, its bed only retaining heavy objects initially, with lighter midden material when it had been allowed to silt. The presence of Romano British building material and iron slag is of interest since roman tile and brick into both the nearby church and abbey. It is possible that the ditch may have been connected to the springs and ponds to the west of the villa and washed down during the buildings ruin phase. (information summarised from source) (1)
