Full Description
During an archaeological evaluation carried out on land close to the Old Forge, off High Street, Garlinge, the only possible archaeological feature was a very wide, undated ditch in Trench 1B, which followed the buried natural contour of the land downslope. The uniformity of the feature, in both plan and profile, is in stark contrast to the irregular geological periglacial striations that cut the natural chalk bedrock. If archaeological, this ditch served an unknown function and appears to have stopped short of the two trenches opened to its north-east. It may have been associated with the former use of the site as a smithy/forge but there were no finds to back this up. It is assumed to have
low archaeological significance. (1) (information summarised from source)
