Full Description

An Iron Age pit containing burnt flint and Iron Age pottery sherds was identified during an evaluation at land south of Safari House, Ramsgate in 2016. Location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information). The pit measured 0.88m long, 0.70m wide, and 0.25m deep and was oval in form with steep/sloping sides and a dished base. "The filling comprised a single deposit of light
brown clay with frequent medium sized burnt flints and occasional chalk specks, mostly in the upper
zone. There was no charcoal or other burnt material. This filling produced five moderate-sized pot-sherds of prehistoric flint-tempered ware. There was also a small piece of burnt sandstone" (from the original report, 1).

48 pieces (4.75kg) of burnt flint recovered from the fill of an Iron Age pit. "The largest specimen recorded measured 70 x 60 x 45mm, with the smallest 45 x 35 x 25mm. The greatest dimension of the bulk of the pieces was between 50 and 60mm. Surviving surfaces on most of the burnt flints indicate that they were formed from beach pebbles and cobbles rather than locally collected surface flint. The seashore, where suitable stones might be collected, presently lies some 3.8km to to the east. The majority of the flints were heavily burnt but most were not completely calcined" (from the original report, 1). A piece of burnt sandstone (59g) was associated with the burnt flints within the pit. This may be Folkestone Greensand, however, due to the degree of burning it is difficult to ascertain.

5 sherds (126g) of Iron Age pottery associated with the fill of an Iron Age pit. The pottery originated from two hand made vessels of flint tempered ware.

Sampling and flotation of material from the pit was undertaken. Undated material which may have been contemporary with activity related to the pit included poorly preserved charred plant remains (wheat and barley), peppery furrow and oyster shell. However, due to the lack of dating evidence it is unclear what period these originated from. (1)
