Full Description

during excavations off Fort Road, Margate, four pits were recorded within the limits of the site. Within the northwestern extent of the excavation area the first pit was oval in plan and measured 1.00m x 0.70m with a depth of 0.40m. The relatively concave sides and undulating base gave way to a single fill that consisted of a dark grey medium soft silty clay with no finds retrieved. To the immediate south, the second pit pit was also oval in plan albeit slightly larger measuring 1.10m x 1.30m with a depth of 0.38m. The single undatable fill consisted of dark grey medium soft silty clay. By far the most prominent feature recorded on site was a third pit or possible well. Almost rectangular in plan with rounded corners, this feature measured 2.74m x 0.84m with an excavated depth of 1.60m and had an undulating base cut into the natural chalk. This feature had four distinct fills. The lower fill consisted of loose dark grey/brown silt clay with frequent chalk lumps. Above this, the fill consisted of loose medium grey silt clay with frequent chalk lumps, sealed by dark grey/brown silt clay with frequent chalk and natural flint inclusions. This fill contained six prehistoric flints and four sherds of medieval pottery dating this feature between AD 1200 and AD 1350. The upper fill comprised mid grey silt clay with frequent chalk and flint inclusions. Excavation of this feature, which has been interpretated as a former well, ceased at a depth of c. 1.6m due to health and safety concerns. Directly to the east the fourth pit was oval in plan and measured 1.10m x 1.30m with a depth of 0.38m. The undulating base and concave sides gave way to a dark grey medium soft silty clay with frequent chalk and occasional flint inclusions. The western extent of the feature had been heavily truncated by a modern ceramic pipe. No finds were present within this pit. (inforation summarised from source)
