Full Description
Medieval features including a rubbish pit and a wall associated with St John's Hospital were identified during an evaluation at 37 Northgate, Canterbury in 2018.
The rubbish pit was represented by a large cut containing a series of fills, the latest of which appeared to be post-medieval in date. Five pottery sherds were recovered from the fill, three of which dated to the medieval period, and two of which dated to the post-medieval period, with a combined date range of 1050-1700 AD. The dimensions of the pit are not recorded.
The wall was represented by a cut within which was a structure composed of flint masonry and chalk fragments and which measured around 0.8m E-W. The wall has been interpreted as part of the eastern perimeter wall of the 11th century St. John’s Hospital. Buildings associated with the hospital have been identified through invesitgations to the south west of the site.
A series of soil deposits dating from the medieval - post-medieval periods were also identified at the site. Medieval pottery sherds and oyster shell were associated with some of these deposits. A single residual Roman pottery sherd was also identified at the site. (1)
