Mid-Roman period kilns, pits, floor surfaces, and a gully were identified at 1 Stour View, Broad Oak Road, Canterbury during an evaluation and excavation in 2017.

The kilns were represented by elements of demolished kiln wall and elements of ceramic building material. The majority of these elements were comprised of red cement blocks and fragments. Dump deposits of demolished material appear to have been reused as floor surfaces at the site - either the floor surfaces of kiln or the floor surface of a building within which the kilns operated.

A deposit of crushed tile associated demonstrated evidence for vitrification, suggesting that it had been in close proximity to the firing process.

Several pits were located at the site. These contained material including tile, amphora fragments, tile and cement fragments. These feature measured 1.3-1.44m in length, and 0.17m in depth, however, some of the features were not fully excavated therefore their precise dimensions are not known.

Several features of unknown function were identified at the site. Their fills contained similar material to the fills of other features - e.g., tile and cement fragments. A gully was also excavated at the site. This measured 0.12m in width and around 70mm in depth and contained fragmented tile within its fill. (1)
