Findspot record TR 36 NW 1382 - Iron Age ditches, Birchington

Summary

A pair of Iron age ditches were seen during an archaeological evaluation associated with the installation of a water pipeline at Birchington. It is possible that these relate to the occupation evidence which was seen in other trenches during the evaluation (T6-T7) (location accurate to the nearest 2m based on available information)

Full Description

An archaeological evaluatiuon was carried out ahead of the installation of a pipeline near birchington. In Trench 10 of this evaluation two ditches were revealed. The east/west ditch was 0.66m wide and 0.19m deep. It had steep concave sides to a U-shaped base. Its fill contained Late Iron Age/Roman pottery and worked flint. Northeast/ south-west ditch was 0.47m wide and 0.17m deep. It had steep concave sides leading to a U-shaped base and was filled by 1005.. The dated feature, or perhaps both represented within this trench, may relate to the prehistoric settlement activity identified within Trenches 6 and 7. (information summarised from source) (1)
