Monument record TQ 77 NE 1128 - Mound within a field south of The Mean on St Mary's Marshes
Summary
The earthwork of a small oval mound, probably a post medieval livestock refuge mound, is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This mound is is the only mound within a field south of The Mean on St Mary's Marshes and has since been levelled. According to the 1885 Ordnance Survey map this field was then part of The Mean, which was described as "Common to the Parishes of High Halstow and St Mary's". The field had been ploughed with narrow drainage channels that have the appearance of ridge and furrow and which predate the mound. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous examples were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
