Monument record TQ 77 NW 203 - The earthwork remains of an elongated oval mound measuring c.6m x 13m, probably an example of a 19th century or earlier stock refuge mound
Summary
The earthwork remains of an elongated oval mound measuring c.6m x 13m, probably an example of a 19th century or earlier stock refuge mound constructed on low-lying pasture within marshlands on the Hoo Peninsula and the margins of the Thames Estuary. These mounds have been referred to and identified in contemporary writings (Spurrell, 1885). The mound appears to overlie the remains of rig and furrow which is thought to be part of the post medieval pasture improvement and drainage practice. This mound was mapped from 1953 RAF aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
