Full Description
Two medieval kilns were identified during a geophysical survey near Darwin College, University of Kent in 2000. One kiln measured 5m in length, 1.20-3.40m in width and was constructed from plain roof tile and clay. The feature was associated with a 3.20m long revetment wall to the south west, also constructed from tile. The kiln was dated to 1238-86 AD using archaeomagnetism.
The other kiln identified during the survey was located 60m in the east of the first kiln. This feature was associated with a medieval industrial complex comprising clay extraction pits, patches of ferrous material, and a NE-SW aligned trackway. (1)
