Monument record TQ 77 NE 1289 - One of three probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds situated within a field on Cooling Marshes

Summary

The earthwork of a small oval mound circa 13m by 10m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1953. This is one of three probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds situated within a field on Cooling Marshes near the northern end of Cooling parish (see also NMR 1533999 and 1534010). It was still present in 1978 but appears to have been levelled by 2007. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
