Monument record TQ 77 NE 1292 - One of two probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds situated within a field on Cooling Marshes
Summary
The earthwork of a roughly circular mound circa 15m by 12m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This is one of two probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds situated within a field on Cooling Marshes (see also NMR 1534190) This mound was situated towards the centre of Cooling Marshes. This mound had been levelled by 2007. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
