Monument record TQ 77 NE 1296 - One of three probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds situated within a field on Cooling Marshes
Summary
The earthwork of a roughly oval mound circa 11m by 8m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This is one of three probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds situated within a field on Cooling Marshes (see also NMR 1534207 and NMR 416600). This mound was near the centre of Cooling Marshes and appears to have been levelled by 2007. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
