Monument record TQ 77 NE 1297 - One of two probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds within a field in Cooling Marshes
Summary
The earthwork of a roughly circular mound circa 8m by 7m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This is one of two probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds within a field in Cooling Marshes. This mound is situated towards the southern end of the marshes. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
