Monument record TQ 77 NE 1299 - Probable post medieval livestock refuge mound, the only one within a field on Whalebone Marshes

Summary

The earthwork of a rectangular mound circa 11m by 6m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This probable post medieval livestock refuge mound is the only one within a field on Whalebone Marshes. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
