Full Description

During an archaeological strip map and sample excavation carried out on land off Briary Road in Margate, ahead of the redevelopment of the site, a group of Bronze Age ring ditches were recorded. The first and largest was approximately 17m in diameter and had been re-cut at a later stage, likely in the early Iron Age. The feature produced a number of potsherds dated to Early Iron Age. Preliminary dating placed these features in Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age mainly due to later re-cuts that produced more dating evidence than initial cuts. A number of discrete features inside the area encompassed by this ring-ditch were sample excavated but produced only small amount of useful dating material. A second ring ditch was located immediately to the west of the first, this was much smaller and was not closely dated. A third partial ring ditch was exposed to the south, this was associated with Two inverted cremation urns of the Middle to Mid to Late Bronze Age that were recovered from a single pit. Both this ditch and the cremations burials have a likely middle Bronze Age date. (1)
