Full Description
Weapons pits and mounds of Second World War date were visible as earthworks in RAF/HLA/380 STBD 959 15-DEC-1941. They were recorded as levelled earthworks on Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021.
A weapons pit comprising a revetted slit trench was located on the south side of The Length in ground now occupied by house numbers 7/8. A further small slit trench without any surrounding bank was positioned just to the south. Three chalky mounds of likely contemporary use stood in close proximity; they were too large simply to represent spoil from the visible slit trenches. A tall structure, about 2.6m by 2.3m on plan, stood just to the rear of these features, linked to the largest mound by a chalky footpath.
These features form part of the St Nicholas at Wade Defended Area that was established in 1940-41. They were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (1-2)
