Full Description
A 19th century jetty on the northern edge of Nor Marsh (an island in the Medway) can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The jetty was built at a date between 1896 and 1909 parallel with the coast. It was 187m long and up to 19m wide and centred on TQ 8102 7024. A second jetty further west was also in place at the same date. This was positioned at right angles to the coast (It met the land at approximately TQ 8061 6999) and measured circa 178m by 1.5m. No trace was seen on aerial photographs. Aerial photographs also show that the land surface had been built up along the northern edge of the island. Map evidence suggests that this had taken place by 1909 and had filled the delph and other water channels along the northern edge of the island which were no longer depicted on the map. A building had also been erected on this spoil south of the jetty at TQ 8100 7021; it had gone by 1946 but a depression marking its location was still visible at that date. It seems likely that the jetty was built to allow the dumping to take place of this material which was the result of dredging the river. There are three tracks defined by wheel ruts that lead from the western end of the jetty and head towards the south western end of the island. They stop short of the group of buildings known as Nor House. Aerial photographs taken in 2007 show the remains of some of the piles for the main jetty can still just be seen above the mud and the remains of the cart tracks. These features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-6)
