Full Description
The site of the former Hengrove Golf Course - (Margate (Thanet) Golf Club, Hengrove), established in 1896. The site was set out on 200 acres of undulating well-drained chakland with the farmhouse for its club house. Initially proposed as an 18 hole course it was inaugurted in January 1897. It was temporarily reduced to 15 holes in 1906, but extended to 18 holes in 1914. It was requisitioned in 1939 for by the War Office for troop training and food production, but appears to have been developed into a defended area with a large area. It never reopened after the war.
During the early years of the war, extensive trenches and barbed wire entanglements interspersed with gun emplacements and fox holes were constructed to defend an area 665m x 450m. The cropmark traces of the infilled bunkers can be seen amongst the military defences on wartime photographs -RAF/HLA/564 V 6016 01-JUN-1942, and some trace can be seen as cropmarks amongst the cropmark remains of the trenches and gun emplacements on aerial photographs -Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021.
